Wikipedia started life as an offshoot of Nupedia， a free， online encyclopedia being written by experts. To speed up the production of articles， two members of the Nupedia team， Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales…， had the idea of allowing anybody to edit entries， using "wiki" technology. The result quickly eclipsed Nupedia. It is an astonishing success story. On paper， the idea that volunteers could collectively produce the largest and most popular encyclopedia the world has ever seen sounds implausible. Surely reference works need to be compiled by experts？ Yet Wikipedia now has over 17m articles， 3.5m of them in English， and its popularity-it is one of the ten biggest sites on the web and is used by around 400m people each month-shows how much people value it….

[해설] 인터넷 백과사전 위키피디아의 탄생 배경을 설명한 글이다. 사람들이 자신의 지식을 올리고 이후 다른 사람이 틀린 점을 교정해 주는 식으로 백과사전을 만들어가는 '위키피디아'나 회원들이 서로 질문하고 답을 해 주는 네이버의 '지식iN' 등은 집단 지성의 대표적 사례다.

집단 지성은 보통 사람들도 이성적 판단을 내릴 수 있는 존재이며 집단은 개인이 가진 능력의 합이나 똑똑한 소수의 전문가보다 나은 판단을 할 수 있다고 가정한다. 집단 지성이 발휘되기 위해서는 △집단 구성이 다양해야 하고 △권한이 분산돼야 하며 △구성원이 상호 독립적이어야 한다. 정답 ①
